Book Blogger Blog Tour Interview with Brian Michael Good

Tell us how you came up with the concept for “Never Surrender Your Soul”?

I have read about an alarming rate of our young and ex-military men and women committing suicide. Back in 2008, I read stories of two nine-year-olds in different states who died by suicide by hanging. In 2009, I read about a young married couple in Florida, who, at the age of twenty-one, died by suicide and left their one-year-old child to be raised by their grandparents. My book was inspired by my own suicide attempt and how I changed my life afterwards.

Why did you feel you needed to write this particular book?

I thought that by writing my book I could make a difference to some people who feel that life is no longer worth living and have no one to turn to for help.

What do you want readers to take from “Never Surrender Your Soul”?

I will answer that question with two passages from the “Breaking the Cycle of Abuse” chapter in my book:

“I used to blame others for every hurt, from the years of abuse (emotionally, physically, and mentally) during my childhood and teenage years, but now, having forgiven them (my abusers) for everything, I blame no one but myself for not allowing myself to heal, especially as I became an adult, when I kept the hurt and I didn’t seek help.”

“I accepted the abuse that I allowed others to bestow on me. It took me a lifetime to discover that people do not scar you or give you pain; it was my acceptance of their mistreatment. I blame myself for not being able to heal from the hurt and the scars that I now realize were self-inflicted. I found that self-pity was one of my greatest weaknesses. Self-pity does not do anyone any good. We are all much stronger than we initially think when something bad happens in our life.”

Which chapter of the book was the hardest to write?

“Breaking the Cycle of Abuse” chapter was the hardest to write, because I was not fully healed from the corporal punishment that was used to discipline me during my childhood, and the verbal abuse that I experienced on a daily basis. This is what I say about it in my book:

“Yelling and corporal punishment instilled fear in me. I felt traumatized, which contributed to a lower self-esteem and academic performance during my formative developmental years.” These sentiments and emotional trauma I carried with me into adulthood. Breaking free from the cycle of family treatment passed on from one generation to the next takes a good deal of effort.

What has been your biggest achievement/challenge as an author?

My biggest achievement was writing “Never Surrender Your Soul” while I was homeless; although, I am sure I am not the first author who has been in that situation. Two main challenges I had that were made more difficult by my life situation were: writing the book and publishing the book.

Some additional challenges I faced while writing the book were: lack of sleep, poor eating habits/diet, sitting in front of the computer twelve hours a day, lack of exercise, lack of a social life (a result of talking about the book to everyone I met), stress from mental blocks and deadlines, and lack of money.

Are you an avid or occasional reader? What is your favorite book genre?

My favorite book genre is self-help for the body, mind, and soul. I recall a passage from the second book I’ve partially written:

“I have come to realize that without the engine, the body, getting a tune-up, and the driver, the mind cannot get to where it wants to go in life very well. A healthy mind begins with a healthy body, and vice versa. The mind thinks so much more clearly when the body gets a tune-up at least three days a week. Dealing with life’s challenges has much to do with your body, mind, and soul getting a tune-up.”

What new project(s) are you working on?

I recently decided that the second book I will publish will be a book on organic and natural skincare. I have been selling organic and natural skincare for 14 years, and I have great testimonials. I have written many articles and there is more than enough material to publish a book.
